Product information "SparkFun Qwiic - GPS Dead Reckoning Breakout, NEO-M8U"

The SparkFun NEO-M8U GPS Breakout is a high-quality GPS board with equally impressive configuration options. The NEO-M8U utilises the benefits of u-blox Untethered Dead Reckoning (UDR) technology. The module enables continuous navigation without the need for an electrical connection to the vehicle, reducing installation costs for aftermarket dead reckoning applications.

The NEO-M8U module is a 72-channel GNSS receiver of the u-blox M8 engine, which means it can receive signals from the GPS, GLONASS, Galileo and BeiDou constellations with an accuracy of ~2.5 metres. The module supports the simultaneous reception of three GNSS systems. The combination of GNSS and integrated 3D sensor measurements on the NEO-M8U provides accurate real-time positioning rates of up to 30 Hz.

Compared to other GPS modules, this breakout maximises positioning accuracy in dense urban or covered areas. Even in poor signal conditions, continuous positioning is possible in urban environments and even with complete signal loss (e.g. in short tunnels and multi-storey car parks). With UDR, positioning starts as soon as the map is powered, even before the first GNSS fix is available! The lock time is further reduced by the integrated battery; you have a backup power supply that allows the GPS to achieve a hot lock within seconds!

Additionally, this u-blox receiver supports I2C(u-blox calls this Display Data Channel), which makes it perfect for Qwiic compatibility so we don't have to use up our precious UART ports. Since we are using our handy Qwiic system, no soldering is required to connect it to the rest of the system. Still, we've broken out the pins at 0.1" spacing in case you'd rather use a breadboard.

U-blox based GPS products are configurable with the popular but dense Windows program called u-center. Many different functions can be configured on the NEO-M8U: Baud rates, update rates, geofencing, spoofing detection, external interrupts, SBAS/D-GPS, etc. All this can be done within the SparkFun Arduino Library!

The SparkFun NEO-M8U GPS Breakout is also equipped with an on-board battery that powers the RTC on the NEO-M8U. This reduces the time to first fix from a cold start (~26s) to a warm start (~1.5s). The battery maintains the RTC and GNSS orbit data over a long period of time even without a power connection.

This product requires an antenna: Take a look at the associated products/accessories and select a suitable U.FL antenna for your project.
