What is Pimoroni Breakout Garden?
Pimoroni Breakout Garden is a modular plug-in system that enables the easy use of breakout boards with a wide range of microcontrollers such as the Raspberry Pi, Arduino, or ESP32. Instead of laboriously wiring or soldering sensors or displays, Pimoroni breakouts can be plugged directly into the appropriate slots – completely without tools or prior knowledge.
The system supports I2C and SPI-compatible modules, including environmental sensors, OLED displays, LED modules, button and interface boards, as well as capacitive moisture sensors. The slots on the Breakout Garden board ensure a secure fit and stable connections – ideal for quick experiments or long-lasting projects.
Each breakout board comes with a dedicated Python library and documentation, making integration into custom Raspberry Pi projects particularly convenient.
Applications with Pimoroni Breakout Garden
The modular structure opens up numerous possibilities for microcontroller applications. With the Pimoroni Grow HAT Mini, for example, capacitive soil moisture sensors can be connected to automatically monitor plants. Thanks to programmable switching pins, even small pumps or lamps can be controlled – ideal for an intelligent greenhouse on a desk or in the classroom.
Another example is the 1.12" OLED Breakout, which is perfectly suited for small status displays, icons, or simple animations. Thanks to support for I2C and SPI as well as high readability, it is suitable for both Raspberry Pi and Arduino.
Classic environmental sensing such as the BME280 Breakout can also be integrated via Breakout Garden. Temperature, air pressure, and humidity can be read with high precision – useful for smart home monitoring, environmental analysis, or IoT prototypes.
The Breakout Garden Board – the flexible foundation
The Breakout Garden Mini is the central board into which up to three Pimoroni modules can be plugged directly – without any soldering. Two I2C slots and one SPI slot provide connections for a wide range of compatible sensors and displays.
The pins are clearly labeled and allow for a quick, clean connection to the Raspberry Pi. Since I2C devices can share the bus, multiple modules can be operated in parallel – provided their addresses are different.
Breakout Garden is not only intended for permanently installed projects, but is especially well suited for prototyping: modules can be easily swapped, recombined, and tested directly. An excellent solution for developers, makers, and beginners.
