The spanner - your indispensable tool

Do you know that feeling when a screw just won't stay in place, or you can't apply enough force with your bare hands? This is where the spanner comes into play.

What is a spanner?

A spanner is a hand tool that is primarily used to turn and tighten or loosen screws. Its design allows you to apply leverage and thus exert more force on the screw than would be possible with bare hands.

What are spanners used for?

Whether you're assembling a new piece of furniture, repairing a bicycle or in day-to-day workshop operations, a spanner is often indispensable. It helps you to screw connections together securely and firmly and provides the necessary stability for your projects.

What are spanners called?

Spanners are also known as open-end spanners. In some regions, particularly in the USA, they are also known as wrenches. A special adjustable spanner is often referred to as an English or adjustable spanner. Of course, there are also specific names depending on the type and function of the spanner.

What types of spanners are there?

Combination spanner: Closed on both sides, ideal for hard-to-reach places.

Open-end spanner: Open on one side, perfect for quick application.

Combination spanner: Combines ring spanner and open-end spanner in one tool.

Adjustable spanner: With an adjustable jaw so that it fits different screw sizes.

Modern spanners often come with a ratchet function, which makes working even more convenient. Some even have a special surface treatment to prevent slipping and increase durability.

Which spanner fits which nut?

The size of a spanner that fits a particular nut depends on the distance between the opposite sides of the nut (spanner width). The width across flats is usually specified in millimetres (mm) or inches, depending on whether the metric or imperial system is used.

Here are some common size relationships for metric nuts and the corresponding spanners:

- M5 bolt: 8 mm spanner

- M6 screw: 10 mm spanner

- M8 screw: 13 mm spanner

- M10 screw: 17 mm spanner

- M12 screw: 19 mm spanner

- M14 screw: 22 mm spanner

- M16 screw: 24 mm spanner

- ... and so on.

There are of course variations and special sizes, and in practice there may be slight differences from manufacturer to manufacturer. In addition, the above specifications are only common examples; there are many intermediate sizes and special sizes, especially in special applications.

For nuts and bolts that are dimensioned according to the imperial system (e.g. in the USA), the size is specified in fractions of an inch. In this case, you must select the appropriate spanner (or "wrench") based on this size specification.

An important note: The size specification on a spanner normally refers to the spanner width and not to the diameter of the bolt or nut. It is therefore advisable to measure the nut or bolt directly if you are unsure or, if in doubt, to refer to technical data sheets or manufacturer's specifications.

What to look out for when buying a spanner?

Material: High-quality steel guarantees durability and reliability.

Ergonomics: A well-shaped handle increases comfort and reduces fatigue.

Sizes: Consider which screw sizes you work on most frequently and choose accordingly.

Extras: Features such as ratchets, or special coatings can make all the difference.

So, the next time you're faced with a stubborn screw, remember the spanner - your trusted partner in the toolbox. Invest in quality and you won't regret it. Screw away and experience the difference!
