Humidity sensor for your smart home: How practical is an intelligent hygrometer?
The humidity in your own home is a significant factor in terms of physical well-being. Especially in fall and winter, when the heating season is in full swing, the air in your four walls may be too dry. As a result, our mucous membranes dry out and bacteria and viruses can spread particularly well, significantly increasing the risk of catching a cold. In addition, excessively dry indoor air causes dust mites to die, decay and become much easier to inhale. Allergy sufferers therefore suffer particularly from excessively low humidity indoors. In addition, the quality of sleep decreases noticeably if the air in the room is too dry. But the reverse case can also lead to problems. If the air in the room is too humid - for example, because you regularly let your laundry dry in the apartment - mold growth is not uncommon. This, in turn, can become a health risk in the medium to long term. To keep an eye on the humidity in your home at all times, we recommend an air humidity sensor that can be integrated into your smart home system. Berrybase has professional solutions for this purpose.
How do humidity sensors work?
Humidity sensors - also called hygrometers - measure the humidity in a room and show the corresponding value on a display. In the case of smart humidity sensors, however, this is not the only function that benefits you. Smart hygrometers can be linked to other smart home modules. For example, you can pair a smart humidity sensor with a smart heating thermostat and have your heating automatically shut off when the humidity falls below a certain level. In this way, you save energy and ultimately money. Convenient: Most smart home hygrometers can be controlled via the manufacturer's own smartphone app, which is also used for configuration. Furthermore, many models offer the option of being notified via the app when a certain value is exceeded or undershot. As far as the power supply is concerned, manufacturers use different technologies. While many sensors are powered by batteries and can thus be used without a tangle of cables, others receive their energy via a power supply unit. For various models, both options are even possible.
Where can you use humidity sensors?
You can place an air humidity sensor anywhere where air humidity is relevant. Especially for the rooms where you spend the most time, a corresponding gadget is suitable. Thus, especially the bedroom, living room and children's room come into question. But an air humidity sensor is also recommended for the bathroom - especially if there is no window or if the room does not have a ventilation system. If your basement is prone to mold, it is also worthwhile to place a hygrometer there - ideally near the wall.
What should you consider when buying?
If you want to integrate your new smart home humidity sensor into an existing smart home network, you should make sure that it is compatible with the other modules. In other words, the product must be developed by the same manufacturer as the other components in your system and must also use the same wireless standard. Otherwise, the sensor can most likely "only" be used as a pure measuring device. In addition, you should find out before buying what range the respective humidity sensor reaches and whether the measurement is affected by walls. You can usually find the relevant information in the product description.
