Looking for an ambient light detection option? The VEML6030 Qwiic board is a great entry-level option. The VEML6030 is a highly accurate ambient light sensor with 16-bit resolution. Even more impressive is that it can detect light similar to the reaction of the human eye. By using our convenient Qwiic system, no soldering is required to connect it to the rest of your system. Still, we've broken out the pins at 0.1" spacing in case you'd rather use a breadboard.

The SparkFun ambient light sensor measures ambient light in lux and has a number of nice features, including: the ability to set high and low thresholds for an optional interrupt, power saving features that allow for single-digit microampere current draw, and a readable range of zero to 120,000 lux. We have also written an Arduino library that provides full access to all functions and includes sample code that demonstrates all of its capabilities.

Note: The I2C address of the VEML6030 is 0x48 and can be switched to 0x10 using a jumper. A multiplexer/mux is required for communication with several VEML6030 sensors on one bus. If you want to use more than one VEML6030 sensor, you should use the Qwiic Mux Breakout.

Adafruit BH1750 Light Sensor, STEMMA QT / Qwiic

This is the BH1750 16-bit ambient light sensor from Rohm. Because it is so important to humans and most other living things, sensing the amount of light in an environment is a common introduction when learning to work with microcontrollers and sensors. Should we increase or dim the brightness of our display to save power? In which direction should the robot move to stay in an area with the most light? Is it day or night? All these questions can be answered with the help of the BH1750. It is a small, powerful and inexpensive light sensor that you can add to your next project to add light detection and measurement. The BH1750 provides 16-bit light measurements in lux, the SI unit for measuring light, making it easy to compare with other values such as references and measurements from other sensors. The BH1750 can measure from 0 to 65K+ lux, but with some calibration and advanced adjustment of the measurement time, it can even be convinced to measure up to 100,000 lux! Sensors tend to come in small packages and the BH1750 is no different. Not much bigger than a grain of rice, this handy light sensor friend needs some help to be used by people who are experimenting and don't have the desire or tools to work with surface mount parts. We're here to help! The BH1750 is packaged on a board in our STEMMA QT form factor and has an integrated voltage regulator and level shifting circuitry that allows it to operate with 3. 3V devices, such as a Feather M4 or Raspberry Pi, or 5V devices, such as an Arduino. Instead of working with the sensor's tiny little contacts, the board it's packaged on has all the pins broken out to a standard 0.1"/2.54mm pitch header. To make things easier and more flexible, we've also included SparkFun Qwiic compatible STEMMA QT connectors for the I2C bus, so you don't even need to solder! Just plug in a compatible cable and connect it to the MCU of your choice, and you're ready to load software and measure light.QT cable not included. To support the software part, we've written a library that you can use with CircuitPython compatible devices as well as computers like the Raspberry Pi by installing it with PyPi. You can even use it on a full-blown computer by using an MCP2221 breakout. Arduino users can use the well-made hp_BH1750 library by Stefan Armborst and our installation instructions and schematics. It's blue! It is thin! It's the Arduino Pro Mini! SparkFun's minimal design approach to Arduino. This is a 5V Arduino running the 16MHz bootloader. The Arduino Pro Mini does not come with assembled connectors, so you can solder in any connector or wire with any orientation. We recommend that Arduino beginners start with the Uno R3. It's a great board to get you started quickly. The Arduino Pro series is for users who understand the limitations of the system voltage (5V), lack of connectors and USB outside the board. We really wanted to minimise the cost of an Arduino. To achieve this, we used all SMD components, made it dual layer, etc. This board connects directly to the FTDI Basic Breakout Board and supports auto-reset. The Arduino Pro Mini also works with the FTDI cable, but the FTDI cable does not bring out the DTR pin, so the auto-reset function will not work. There is a voltage regulator on board so it can accept a voltage up to 12VDC. If you power the board with unregulated voltage, make sure you connect it to the "RAW" pin and not VCC. The latest and greatest version of this board breaks out the ADC6 and ADC7 pins and adds footprints for optional I2C pull-up resistors! We've also taken the opportunity to put the OSHW logo on it. The AS-108M fingerprint sensor module is a combination fingerprint scanner and MCU that provides a UART interface for easy functionality. The AS-108M stands out from other fingerprint scanners in that it reads the image of a fingerprint by pixel array and provides ridge or valley signals to the A/D converter and digital processor and then to the serial peripheral interface to read the data. While a DMM is suitable for a quick check, a panel-mounted current and voltage meter is handy if you need to constantly monitor a system. Battery-powered systems can be quickly diagnosed by checking the overall system voltage; run times can be calculated based on instantaneous power consumption rates. For all these cases and more, it's just super handy to have a meter at hand. This digital combination DC current and voltage meter measures up to 30 V and 10 A at a quiescent current of about 15 mA. All devices are supplied pre-calibrated, but can be further calibrated after installation with a small trimpot on the back of the device. The wiring diagram shows normal cabling. The thicker 2-pin harness is for the ammeter and is normally wired into the current feedback path to the battery or ground. The thinner 3-pin harness is for the voltmeter. The black wire of the 3-pin harness is internally connected to the ammeter and can be wired to NC (not connected) or ground. The red wire of the ammeter should be connected to the system and the black wire of the ammeter should be connected to ground, otherwise the system will work but the meter will display 0.00 as it cannot display negative values. Fingerprint scanners are ingenious! Why use a key when you have one right at the tip of your finger? Unfortunately, they are often unreliable or difficult to implement. Not anymore! This awesome GT-521F52 fingerprint module from ADH-Tech communicates via TTL Serial so you can easily incorporate it into your next project. The module itself handles the entire task of reading and identifying fingerprints with an integrated optical sensor and a 32-bit ARM Cortex M3 processor. To get started, simply register each fingerprint you want to save by sending the appropriate command and pressing your finger against the reader three times. The fingerprint scanner can store different fingerprints, and the database of prints can even be downloaded from the device and distributed to other modules. In addition to the fingerprint "template", the analysed version of the print, you can retrieve the image of a fingerprint and even pull raw images from the optical sensor! This module is the upgraded version of the GT-521F32 and can store up to an amazing 3,000 different fingerprints! It is able to recognise 360° fingerprints and download/upload templates via the serial interface. In addition, the GT-521Fxx series offers a resolution of 450dpi, with a false acceptance rate of <0.001% and a false rejection rate of <0.1%, while taking only <1.5 seconds to identify a unique fingerprint! It is housed in a robust, IPX7-certified housing and consumes less power than its predecessor. These gearmotors are the same ones recommended for use in the Shadow chassis and offer an inexpensive and easy to use setup to get your wheels turning. Each Hobby geared motor also features a 9mm long output on a straight axle. These geared motors require a voltage of 4.5V with an idle current of 190mA, while having a gear ratio of 48:1 and a wheel speed of 140 rpm unloaded. Each motor order is sold in packs of two. Note: The speed specified in the data sheet is 90RPM. Based on our own testing, we have found that the gearmotors can actually achieve an idle speed of approximately 140 RPM. SparkFun Qwiic - Environmental sensor breakout, BME680

The BME680 environmental sensor from SparkFun is a breakout that combines a gas sensor with temperature, humidity and barometric pressure measurement to create a complete environmental sensor in a single housing. The BME680's gas sensor can detect a variety of volatile organic compounds (or VOCs for short) to monitor indoor air quality. Combined with accurate temperature, humidity and barometric pressure, the BME680 can operate as a completely self-contained environmental sensor, all in a 1 inch x 1 inch breakout! The sensor communicates via either I2C or SPI. We've broken out the I2C pins on our Qwiic system so no soldering is required to connect it to the rest of your system, but if you prefer, both the I2C and SPI pins are also broken out to standard 0.1 inch spaced pins. Note: Determining the actual indoor air quality (IAQ) of the BME680 can be tricky. If you want to use the BME680 for accurate IAQ measurements, we recommend using Bosch's BSEC software. If you need a more direct sensor, we recommend the SparkFun Environmental Sensor Combo, which uses the CCS811 alongside the BME280. SparkFun Qwiic - High-precision temperature sensor, TMP117

The SparkFun Qwiic TMP117 Breakout is a high-precision temperature sensor equipped with an I2C interface. It outputs temperature readings with a high accuracy of ±0.1°C over the temperature range of -20°C to +50°Cs without calibration and a maximum range of -55°C to 150°C. The SparkFun high precision temperature sensor also has very low power consumption, minimising the effects of self-heating on measurement accuracy. By using our convenient Qwiic system, no soldering is required to connect it to the rest of your system. Nevertheless, we have broken out the pins at 0.1" spacing in case you prefer to use a breadboard. The SparkFun high precision temperature sensor also features programmable temperature limits and a digital offset for system correction. While the TMP102 is capable of reading temperatures with a resolution of 0.0625°C and is accurate up to 0.5°C, the on-board TMP117 is not only more precise but has a 16-bit resolution of 0.0078°C! To make using this breakout even easier, we've written an Arduino library to help you get started "Qwiic-ly". See the Documents tab above for more information. Adafruit VEML7700 Lux Sensor - I2C Light Sensor

Vishay has a lot of light sensors on offer, and this is a nice, simple lux sensor that can easily be built into any microcontroller. Most light sensors only give you a number for brighter/darker ambient lighting. The VEML7700 makes your life easier by calculating the lux number, which is an SI unit for light. You get more consistent readings between multiple sensors because you're not dealing with unitless values. The sensor has a 16-bit dynamic range for detecting ambient light from 0 lux to about 120 klux with a resolution of up to 0.0036 lx/ct, with software-adjustable gain and integration times. Interfacing is easy - this sensor uses simple, universal I2C. We've put this sensor on a breakout board with a 3.3V regulator and logic level shifter so you can use it with 3.3V or 5V power/logic microcontrollers. We've written libraries for Arduino (C/C++) and CircuitPython (Python 3) so you can use this sensor with just about any type of device, even a Raspberry Pi! This is Kattni's first board design for Adafruit, it's even signed on the back!
