Product information "FLIRC 2nd Gen - USB Infrared IR Adapter Dongle for PC / Mac / Linux / Raspberry Pi"

What is FLIRC?
FLIRC is a USB infrared receiver that works on all platforms, such as Windows, Mac or Linux. The special thing about FLIRC is that it works with 99% of all infrared remote controls. No matter whether Apple Remote, Sony BRAVIA remote control or video recorder remote control.

How does FLIRC work?
FLIRC is simply connected to a USB port on your computer and is recognised by your operating system as a keyboard. No special drivers are required to install FLIRC. You only need to familiarise your remote control with FLIRC once. This is done using a configuration programme, which you can download free of charge from www.flirc.tv.

How does the configuration work?
The configuration is very simple and takes just a few minutes. You can choose between different controllers in the configuration programme (arrow keys, full keyboard, Boxxee, XBMC or Windows Media Center). You then click on a button in the programme that you want to record and then press the button on the remote control that you want to assign to this command. You can memorise individual key commands as well as key combinations!

Where is the configuration stored?
The FLIRC configuration is not stored on the computer, but in the dongle itself. However, it is still possible to create a backup of the configuration and transfer it to another computer.

How many commands can FLIRC store?
Approx. 160

Can I use FLIRC with the Raspberry Pi?
Yes! FLIRC works with the Raspberry Pi without any problems. You just need to configure your remote control with FLIRC on a PC or Mac beforehand.

FLIRC – silent cases and remote control for the Pi

FLIRC became known with two products that solve very different problems – and are both aimed at the same use case: the Raspberry Pi in the living room.

The FLIRC USB receiver makes any infrared remote control usable on a computer. It is taught the buttons once and then registers as a keyboard, so it works without drivers under Linux, Windows and macOS. This turns a media centre on the Pi into something you can operate from the sofa with the TV remote already lying there.

The aluminium cases follow the same idea of unobtrusiveness. The Pi's processor makes thermal contact with the housing via a pad, so the entire case acts as a heatsink – no fan, no noise, and a look that fits under a television.

At BerryBase you will find FLIRC cases and receivers for media centres, retro gaming and living-room Pi projects.
