EnOcean – wireless without batteries
EnOcean is a German company from Oberhaching near Munich, spun off from Siemens in 2001, which pursues an idea that sounds unusual at first: radio devices that need no power supply at all.
The technology behind this is energy harvesting. A wireless switch gains the energy for its radio telegram from the pressing of the button itself – a tiny generator converts the movement into enough electricity for one transmission. Sensors use small solar cells that work even in room light, or temperature differences.
The practical consequence is considerable: no batteries to change, ever. A switch can be glued to a glass wall, moved later or installed where no cable runs – in listed buildings, in rented flats, in retrofits.
