Thanks to their open design, the boards enable easy and straightforward assembly as well as the integration of network-based sensors. This makes the kits from the NodeMCU ESP32 and ESP8266 series perfect for hobby enthusiasts.
The NodeMCU v2 ESP8266 Development Board, for example, is ideal for projects where you want to use various development platforms such as Arduino, Python, or NodeMCU. The kit features interfaces for GPIO, PWM, IIC, 1-Wire, and ADC, making it extremely versatile. Additionally, the ESP8266 v2 comes with integrated WiFi and a CP2102 USB chipset. An upgraded version of the board—the NodeMCU v3 ESP8266—is also available at Berrybase. It offers the same features as the v2 model but includes 4 MB of flash memory and two additional pins (Ground and USB Power Output).
The D1 Mini ESP8266 Development Board, on the other hand, is the ideal kit for quickly and easily realizing an IoT project using Arduino programming. With its 11 digital input pins and an additional analog input pin, the D1 Mini Kit offers a wide range of application possibilities. Thanks to 4 MB of flash memory, a CH340 USB chipset, and an integrated onboard WiFi antenna, this product proves to be a highly versatile and powerful tool for your IoT project. It also supports PWM/I2C and One-Wire.
For more ambitious projects, the slightly more expensive D1 Mini Pro is recommended, featuring an integrated CP2104 USB chipset and a u.FL antenna connector for attaching an external antenna. For smaller IoT projects, the cost-effective D1 Mini Lite, with 1 MB of flash memory and the same features as the standard version, might suffice.
Depending on your intended use for the D1 Mini, there are various shields available that allow you to integrate your board with components such as a real-time clock, an OLED display, or temperature, humidity, and pressure sensors.
If you prefer to use WiFi serials for your project, products from the NodeMCU ESP8266 series, such as the ESP-07 or ESP-12E, are excellent options. These powerful modules can complement your Raspberry Pi or Arduino. Due to their GPIO pins, they are also suitable as standalone microcontrollers. The advantage of WiFi serials: with the 802.11 b/g/n standard, you can always enjoy a fast internet connection. However, note that the WiFi serials require a power supply of 3.3V VCC and 3.3V logic level. Using the NodeMCU with 5V may damage the board.
