What is RCA?

The term cinch (also known as RCA) stands for a connection used to transmit electrical signals between two devices. RCA is an audio connector system used to transmit analogue audio signals. In addition to applications for signal transmission, it is also occasionally used for power supply. It is best known for its use to connect loudspeakers. In addition to the cinch connection, the jack plug also exists, but is discussed elsewhere. The cinch connection was developed about 80 years ago in the USA, from where it was established much later in Europe and Germany. The official name for this plug is RCA jack (Radio Corporation of America).

It consists of a pair of plugs, one red (for the right audio signal) and one white or black (for the left audio signal), which are plugged into corresponding sockets on an audio device, such as an amplifier or receiver.

RCA plugs are widely used and are often used in the hi-fi and home cinema industry to transmit audio signals from source devices such as CD players, record players or DVD players. They can also be used to transfer audio signals from a computer or mobile device to an audio system, provided the system has appropriate RCA inputs.

It should be noted that RCA plugs can only be used for analogue audio signals and not for digital audio signals such as S/PDIF or HDMI.

What is RCA used for?

Today, this standard is mainly used in the home cinema sector for the transmission of audio and video. Analogue signal transmission is very simple. The sound signals are transmitted electromagnetically from the output to the input device. In contrast to digital transmission, the electrical voltage varies proportionally to the sound signal. One cable with two plugs or sockets is needed for each sound channel. Unlike multi-functional plugs such as USB or HDMI, with an RCA connection each individual cable has its own fixed function. Therefore, several cables must be used for several functions. To prevent incorrect connection of the plugs, each plug has a different colour which indicates the function.

Which colour for what?

For easy differentiation between the two stereo channels, colour coding of the cinch plugs has become established. For sound transmission, the white plug stands for the left sound channel, the red plug for the right sound channel. If there is a black plug, it belongs to the subwoofer or centre speaker. If you discover a yellow plug on your cinch cable, it is intended for video transmission. The cable with the yellow plug transmits the analogue, unmodulated composite video signal.

Disadvantages of Cinch

In addition to the good handling, there are unfortunately also some disadvantages with this plug. Manufacturing inaccuracies can occur more frequently, as there is no standard for manufacturing. This can mean that the plug is either too loose or too tight. The result is either a loose contact in the connection or possible damage to the plug connection. Another disadvantage is the electromagnetic interference susceptibility of this connection, which is why cinch connectors are not used in the high-end range. The typical hum occurs when the 50 Hz frequency of the AC household mains overlays the signal. Cinch plugs should only be plugged in and out with the unit disconnected from the power supply, as the inner contact always touches the socket first. Plugging in with the unit switched on can cause high voltage peaks and destroy components. Concertgoers may be familiar with the very loud crackling noise on stage when a live cable is pulled again. With analogue connections, it is particularly worthwhile to pay attention to high-quality cables and plugs. Unshielded cables are particularly susceptible to interference.

RCA to jack adapter

You want to connect your smartphone, MP3 player or notebook to your hi-fi system? The matching cable provides you with the ideal connection between the 3.5 mm jack output and the cinch input on the hi-fi device. This way, you can still make your room walls shake with a small player.

Cinch to HDMI adapter

You have an older video recorder, DVD or Bluray player with RCA outputs and want to connect it to a modern flat-screen TV? No problem. With the right cable, this connection will be possible. But be careful: For these two signal formats to communicate with each other, both input and output devices must support the signal conversion function (code and decode). If both input/output devices do not support signal conversion, a signal conversion box is required. Then, in addition to the adapter cables, you also need the corresponding converter.
